Meaning behind the painting
During a year spent travelling Costa Rica, Francesca fell head over heels for the wild, untamed beauty of its landscapes. She set out to capture the spirit of this magical country in a single painting, a love letter to its rich biodiversity and the unforgettable creatures she met along the way.
From the electric shimmer of the Blue Morpho Butterfly and the ever-present tree frogs that seemed to follow her from jungle to coast, to Patric, a rescued Keel-billed Toucan she met at the Toucan Rescue Ranch in San José, each encounter left an imprint. But it was the Olive Ridley turtles that truly stole her heart.
One mist-draped sunrise, thousands of turtles emerged from the ocean to begin the next generation. Among them was an ancient mother, her shell etched with the stories of a life lived in the deep. Francesca sat in the volcanic sands, watching her slow, powerful crawl, a moment of struggle, resilience, and grace that would stay with her forever.
The painting takes its name from “Pura Vida”, a phrase deeply woven into Costa Rican culture. More than just ‘pure life,’ it’s a celebration of living fully, embracing simplicity, and finding joy even in the challenges. This artwork is a tribute to that spirit.
